Welcome to the art of Paleo and weight loss.
When I think of Paleo the first thing that springs to mind is that it is a lifestyle choice rather than a form of weight loss. Actually, I hate actually saying that because when you start talking about “lifestyle choices” you sound like one of those crazy people that has been brainwashed. But in reality that is what we are talking about here.
I remember chatting to someone when I was in my later stages of pregnancy that was all for eating everything and just exercising more. She would walk about what she ate for breakfast and of course what I ate. And she was rather insulted that something like Paleo would make her give something up.
There was no way on earth that she was giving up buttery white toast or other similar products. At the same time she was happy to eat a lot of rubbish without caring too much about the damage it was doing to her body.
I pointed out that Paleo could help her lose weight in the long term, but I kind of lost her at that point and haven’t seen her on the group since!
But it really did get me thinking about weight loss on Paleo. You could convert to the Paleo way of life and gain weight if you wanted to. If you constantly just ate Paleo approved products that were high in calories then this is what would end up happening.
Just think of how many calories are in coconut milk and in avocadoes and then also think of the calories that are in olive oil. We love them all but if you have them at each meal then its going to be really hard to lose weight at the same time as eating them.
Instead aim at eating a maximum of 1 avocado a day and then have one meal a day that is oil free. Then make sure that ¾ of your plate is vegetables and lean meat because they are lowest in calories.
Then if you love your sauces on your food mix and match them. Have a tomato based sauce one day (which is very low in calories) and then another day have a coconut milk sauce (which is higher in calories).
Then another option is to calorie count and aim for every meal having a good balance of vegetables, good fats and protein. That way you are getting everything that your body needs but have the chance to lose weight too. Plus with a good balance of foods you’ll be amazed by how good you will feel.
