Welcome to Paleo when breastfeeding.
There has to be one time in my life when I find it the absolute hardest to stick to a healthy diet. Never mind when you are pregnant and you’re blaming all those chocolate cravings on the baby, but the really difficult time is when you are breastfeeding.
I know this because I am currently breastfeeding my newborn son and unlike the two babies I breastfed before him, he eats for the whole household. He is constantly wanting more and more and its hard to keep up with his demands.
But the downside of this is what it does to your body. Even though there are plenty of comments that when breastfeeding that your weight will all drop off you it is often a myth. This is mainly because when you are feeding a baby they are burning a lot of calories. In a way it is like doing a big gym workout twice a day, you realise that because of this it is like your body saying that you can’t cope on the current amount of food you are eating and you WANT MORE.
Then you tell yourself you’re being greedy and feel guilty for bingeing.
Then add to this the fact that you are up during the night feeding your baby and all of a sudden all you want is a big batch of chocolate chip cookies and not much else.
I have to have had more sweet things in the last few weeks than in the whole of my pregnancy and you can easily see why when women are breastfeeding that they either maintain their weight or actually gain it. I hope I am maintaining but I am too afraid to stand on the scales to find out which one it is.
In reality the advice I should be following is to eat more good fats and protein to fill me up more. I normally have a few chickens throughout the week but I am going to have more chicken and avocado combined along with some eggs for breakfast. I don’t know why I don’t eat more eggs as I really like them.
So I might just take that advice and start doing something about it that is once I have the energy to follow my own advice. I think I see some Paleo baked goods coming my way…..
