Welcome to confessions of a Paleo on holiday.
I wanted to share with you more information about my summer holiday in the sunshine and the impact it had on my Paleo lifestyle. So that if you’re packing your bags for your summer holiday that you know that you are not the only one trying to be Paleo.
I know many Paleo followers that say that they only ever follow the Paleo way of life loosely when they are going away or eating out. It is not that they are not committed it is more of a case of actually finding food that they could eat and that was Paleo friendly. So this is what happened for me while being on holiday:
Carb Frenzy Breakfast
I was really excited over the breakfast buffet. I was expecting lots of lovely fresh fruit and lots of healthy bits and pieces for me to get into. Instead of this I was presented with some horrible hard fresh fruit, pastries, toast and cereal. The only thing that was Paleo that was on offer was the huge amounts of olive oil that the Spanish were pouring over their toast like it was butter or jam.
There was also a cook to order area for eggs. Well I hate fried eggs so I opted for pancakes; they of course had unhealthy flour in them but it was the best of the bad bunch and I had them with the Greek yoghurt and just craved the time I could go back home and have my favourite Paleo food again.
Eating out can be a real chore on Paleo but being in Spain and all the Mediterranean food meant that it was easier than one might think!
I had lots of dishes with pork and chicken in a homemade tomato sauce, lots of chorizo and stayed away from the dreaded Paella. The only time I really strayed was with the white potatoes but with them being acceptable on Whole 30 I don’t think it was really that bad!
Self Catering Cooking
We also did a lot of cooking in our accommodation for lunch and dinner and this gave me the chance to be Paleo as much as possible. We had lots of stir fries, lots of tray bakes that were high in meat and vegetables and had loads of Paleo burgers. It was the healthiest time during the time away.
Unlike other package holidays we have had in the past I thought we were really good this time and didn’t even have any fast food!
