Just because you’re on the paleo diet, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lose weight. If you only eat high fat foods, the pounds will add up. Most newbies make this mistake, so their caloric intake goes through the roof. Make sure you use a food scale to track your portions. Enjoy everything in moderation.
Restrict High-Fat Foods
If you’re overweight or obese, limit high-fat foods on the paleo diet. These include nuts, fatty meats, vegetable oils, coconut oil, and butter. Choose lean cuts of meat and use a non-stick cooking spray instead of oil. Eat nuts as a snack, but keep your portions small.
Cut Down on Sugar
The paleo diet restricts table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, and other sugars. However, it does allow the consumption of honey, dried fruit, maple syrup, grapes, peaches, and high-sugar foods. If you eat too much of these, you’ll eventually gain weight. Ideally, snack on low sugar fruits and ditch the honey or use it occasionally. Apples, watermelon, berries, avocado, lemons, and grapefruit are an excellent choice.
Eat More Protein
High-protein foods increase satiety, regulate blood sugar, and fuel your muscles. They also have immune-enhancing properties and reduce muscle loss while on a low calorie diet. By adding more protein to your meals, you’ll stay full longer and have more energy. Eat plenty of fish, chicken, turkey, lean beef, eggs, game meat, bison, and leafy greens. Consider drinking protein shakes made with paleo approved ingredients.
Make Exercise a Habit
Physical exercise burns calories and keeps you fit. The more active you are, the better. You don’t have to be overweight to exercise. This habit will improve your health on every level. Depending on your schedule, hit the gym three to five times a week. If you hate lifting weights, exercise outdoors. Find an activity you enjoy, such as hiking, power walking, swimming, or CrossFit.
